Pierce convinced Garnett to drop his no-trade clau

On the night Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were traded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of the speculation circulated around whether Garnett would be willing to waive his no-trade clause.

Pierce was aware of all of the rumors surrounding a possible trade to the Brooklyn Nets and decided to do something.

"That's when I made the call [to Garnett]," Pierce said, .
Pierce's reason for wanting out of Boston matched that of new Clippers coach Doc Rivers—neither wanted to encounter a rebuilding at this stage of their career.
"Like I said over the last couple of years, it would be tough to go back to an environment that wasn't trying to win a championship," Pierce said. "When you get that taste of success ... you don't want to go backwards. That's how I felt. I think Doc [Rivers] felt the same way. Kevin [Garnett] felt the same way. That's why we all put ourselves in these situations where we could try and win."
Pierce, Garnett and Jason Terry join a roster with stars Deron Williams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], forming a group that on paper looks like it should contend in the Eastern Conference.
On Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it appeared the reality he was no longer a Celtics finally set in for Pierce. He compared leaving Boston, where he played for 15 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to breaking up with your first love.
"The first girl you was in love with," Pierce said, "and y'all broke up, you cried,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thought about her, probably sent letters; she rejected them. You cried some more, and then you moved on."
Pierce did recognize those feelings have the potential to come flooding back the first time he returns to TD Garden as a visitor.
"It's going to be difficult," Pierce said. "It's definitely going to be emotional. My life was there. I spent almost half my life in Boston. It's definitely going to be tough."
