Player query over new Elite Classic
Just who will play in the eight teams the Pythons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Coasters, Rush, Fleet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rays, Reef, Cyclones and Monarchs competing for the $250,000 in prizemoney?
Elite Classic Basketball managing director Jeff Van Groningen indicated he was in discussion with NBL clubs and that returning NCAA college players and no restriction on imports would add to the appeal of the fiveday series from April 611 at Brett Maher Court. All matches will be televised live, freetoair on Network 10's One HD channel.

Melbourne Vixens netballer Corletto is not the only outside sporting personality to own a team. Hawthorn AFL star Lance "Buddy" Franklin is holding the reins at the Pythons, while Copeland is a joint owner with retired 14year NBA guard Sedale Threatt (LA Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Seattle SuperSonics).
"There are no import restrictions and we'll also have access to NCAA college players who are coming home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Van Groningen said.
Foot Locker is heading corporate support for the event and closer to its tipoff, Nike will reveal uniforms for each team.
Spalding has jumped aboard to provide the official ball and Triple M is the event's official radio partner.
One HD will show eight hours of live action every day, with three matches each day.
Basketball Australia chief executive officer Larry Sengstock said as the tournament was a private enterprise, it is not a BA or NBL sanctioned event and it was inappropriate to comment.
"We will say however that anything that helps generate additional public interest in the sport of basketball is positive and we will be watching the tournament with interest to see how successful it is," Sengstock said.
New and old rules will highlight the event with jumpballs back, the possession arrow dumped. Matches will be of four 12minute quarters but the NBA 48minute game format will actually lead to shorter games as only two timeouts per half one regular, one 20second will be allowed.
Winning quarters will carry bonus points making every quarter important.
On two occasions each game, one per half,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the coach or oncourt captain may opt for the "gamebreaker" power play which means for three minutes, any threepoint basket will be worth four points,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the backboard lit in green to signify the phase is in effect.
It all sounds and looks great. But the question remains players.
"I honestly don't know enough about it to comment about player availability," 36ers chief exec Ben Fitzsimons said. "We'd expect to speak with JVG (Van Groningen) soon."
