Properties And Benefits Of Graviola

Properties And Benefits Of Graviola
Graviola, known scientifically as Annona muricata, is a tree that grows in the rain forests of sub-Saharan Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. Folk medicine practitioners in those areas have long used extracts from the graviola's bark,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaves and twigs to treat their patients. Laboratory and animal studies indicate graviola has a wide array of medicinal properties, but it has not yet been tested extensively in humans. Consult your doctor before self-treating with graviola or any other herbal remedy.
What It IsAlso known as Brazilian paw paw, guanabana and soursop, graviola is a relatively small evergreen tree that reaches a maximum height of 16 to 19 feet upon maturity. The tree bears an 8- to 12-inch-long spiny, green fruit that takes on a yellowish cast as it ripens. People living in the areas of graviola cultivation usually eat the fruit fresh after first discarding its spiny outer layer. The active ingredients in graviola are chemicals called acetogenins, which have shown an impressive variety of medicinal properties in laboratory testing. Specifically, graviola extracts have displayed antiparasitic, antimicrobial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic and cytotoxic properties, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. researchers Lana Dvorkin-Camiel and Julia S. Whelan reviewed research on the use of extracts from tropical American plants in the treatment of infectious diseases. In their assessment of graviola, published in the December 2008 issue of the "Journal of Dietary Supplements," the two cited multiple in-vitro studies that demonstrate graviola's effectiveness against various microbial and parasitic agents. Specifically, graviola appears to be effective against such parasites as Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania panamensis, Nippostrongylus braziliensis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Artemia salina and Trichomonas vaginalis, as well as against the Herpes simplex virus.
Antihyperglycemic PropertiesIn a Nigerian animal study, methanolic extracts from graviola were tested on laboratory animals in which diabetes had been chemically induced. Researchers in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Obafemi Awolowo University divided 30 laboratory rats into three groups for testing. Group A, the control group, consisted of 10 rats in which no changes were induced. Rats in Group B and C were injected with streptozotocin to induce a state of hyperglycemia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or diabetes. Over the course of four weeks, rats in Group C were injected daily with a graviola extract. In findings published in the October 2008 issue of the "African Journal of Traditional,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Complementary and Alternative Medicines," the research team reported that test animals in Group C showed significantly lower blood glucose levels than those in the untreated Group B, confirming the antihyperglycemic properties of the graviola extract.
Anticarcinogenic PropertiesIn a study conducted by Taiwanese researchers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new and known acetogenins extracted from the seeds and leaves of graviola were tested in the laboratory against two human hepatoma, or liver cancer, cell lines. The three new acetogenins extracted from seeds were designated muricin H, muricin I and cis-annomontacin, while the two extracted from leaves were named cis-corossolone and annocatalin. In an article published in the April 2002 issue of the "Journal of Natural Products," the researchers reported that all five of the new graviola acetogenins exhibited strong activity against the cancer cells in in-vitro testing.
