Why being smart about plastics matters by Healthy Child Healthy World
The devil in the risk posed by bottles and other items made of plastic is in the details. Individual chemicals can wreak havoc:Bisphenol A (BPA) is present in polycarbonate plastic. BPA leaches from polycarbonate plastic under certain conditions. Exposure to BPA may cause negative health effects. BPA leaching is greater in polycarbonate that is scratched,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cloudy or exhibits other signs of wear. BPA leaching is also accelerated by heat. Lead is used to stabilize PVC. PVC forms hydrochloric acid when it degrades, which causes a chain reaction that proceeds rapidly to a complete loss of strength. Stabilizers are added to prevent this from occurring. For example, diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) may migrate from foodwraps during storage. It is classified as a probable human carcinogen and also causes chronic health problems, including liver and kidney abnormalities. Breathing dust contaminated by phthalates that have escaped from vinyl products used in the home may be a significant exposure for children. BPA has been shown to be an endocrine disruptor and to simulate the action of estrogen. Do not feed your baby or young child ANYTHING from a can! Their small and underdeveloped livers and kidneys cannot filter it out of their bodies and it builds up like a toxin and is linked to health problems such as cancer. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], certain canned foods have removed BPA linings such as Eden brand canned beans and these are ok. Another small warning about BPA - there can be up to 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 times as much BPA in a receipt than any amount found in food or plastic. Do not touch a receipt around a baby or child and NEVER let them touch or eat one. I found this out about a month after watching my 8 month old get into a pile of receipts and chew on a few. Mortifying that receipts are legally allowed to have a toxin in them which can be present around children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's yesterday's lead paint.
